Too Old for Volunteering? Article 1 NOG Provides Information!

Volunteers Are Valuable. Volunteers keep the street, neighborhood, association, and club running. And they are scarce! Art.1 NOG, the anti-discrimination service for North-East Gelderland, increasingly receives reports from potential volunteers who are being rejected because they are considered too old. This is unfortunate! It’s not only frustrating for the volunteer but also a missed opportunity for the organization seeking volunteers. Because there is still much unfamiliarity with the rules, Art.1 NOG provides a brief explanation.

Volunteering falls under labor, so many of the same rules apply as for a paid employment contract. Anti-discrimination laws also apply to volunteering. Rejection for work due to factors such as race, gender, and sexual orientation is not allowed. Age discrimination in recruitment and selection is also prohibited, including for volunteer work. An individual’s age does not necessarily reflect their talent, skills, enthusiasm, motivation, work ethic, etc. Volunteers who are rejected because they are considered too old are often told it’s because they cannot be insured beyond retirement age. This is not the case; insurance can be arranged without extra costs. Overall, don’t overlook older volunteers!

Have you been rejected due to your age? Or are you unsure if you can accept a volunteer? Call or email Art.1 NOG for free and non-binding advice!
